rawn From takes a text you already own and gives it to another sense. This volume is 1 Enoch 1 through 36 — the Book of the Watchers — as sixteen instrumental cues meant to be playing while you read it. Not a setting of the words, and not one cue per passage — each takes whatever span it needs to hold the thing we saw when we read it.
If you have not met this book before: it is old, it is strange, and it is not the one you grew up with. Nothing here is domestic. There are no households, no wells, no brothers. It opens on the end of the world and then goes somewhere much further away than that.
Side A is a descent. It begins at altitude — mountains shaking, the earth pulled apart, something arriving that the text will describe everywhere except at the centre. We kept our distance from that centre deliberately, and everything on this side is written to look at the light rather than into it.
Then two hundred of them stand on a mountaintop and swear an oath together, and come down.
What we pictured after that is spoilage. Not violence at first — teaching. Metals out of the ground, blades, dyes, what to do to a face to change it. Knowledge handed to people who had no way to ask for it and no way to refuse. And children born who are not the size of children. We were reaching for the sound of something sacred going off, slowly, the way food does.
The side ends with the earth complaining. A cry going up from the ground itself, four of them looking down at it, and a sentence passed — one bound hand and foot and thrown into a hole in a desert until the day he is thrown into fire. A man is given a pen and told to write the verdict out, and asked by the condemned to plead for them, and does, and is refused.
Side B leaves the world entirely, and this is the part we found hardest to picture and most worth trying.
He is taken west, and then further. Mountains of fire that burn without any fuel. A place where the stars that broke their orbits are kept like prisoners, still burning. A desert cut with pillars of fire going down past the bottom of anything. A hollow mountain with four rooms in it where the dead are kept sorted, and one of the rooms has water in it and a light. A tree nobody is allowed to touch yet.
We aimed the whole side at scale without warmth — vast, patient, indifferent, and organised by someone who never appears.
Play it in order. It was built in order.
